WHITE CASTLE, LA (WAFB) -

Some White Castle residents were worried about potential plans to drill three new salt dome wells.

They were invited to give their input about the plans during a public meeting Thursday night.

Some are looking back at the failed salt cavern in Assumption Parish, which caused a massive sinkhole.

Shintech, the company behind the new plans, said it already has four successful wells in the White Castle salt dome.

"We're hoping tonight that we informed the people, local residents of what we're doing, so they can make an informed decision as we go forward," said David Wise, vice president of Manufacturing at Shintech.

"My basic concerns are the chemicals that they make, and this is going to allow them to make more of those chemicals which are known human carcinogens," said resident Lesann Kirkland.

One of the first steps to drilling new wells is to file permits with the Department of Natural Resources.
