WLF: Baby eagle found dead in Ventress likely hit by car, not shot

VENTRESS, LA (WAFB) - Officials with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries are now saying that a baby bald eagle that was believed to have been killed may have died on its own.

The baby bald eagle that was found dead in the 8000 block of Island Road in Ventress last week. Officials originally believed that the eagle was shot and killed.

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries submitted the eagle for a necropsy and was radiographed at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine Thursday.

It was found that the baby eagle suffered severe, complete fractures to both wings and both legs consistent with a high energy, low velocity impact such as being hit by a vehicle. It also had an old, healed fracture of the right carpus.

Officials added that there was nothing consistent with bullet fragments found and no evidence of foul play.

The department says that due to this information, they have officially closed their investigation into the death of the bald eagle.
