NFL Draft: Saints select 5 picks; 5 LSU Tigers get drafted

The New Orleans Saints left the 2016 NFL Draft with five picks, despite entering with six. At least nine players with Louisiana ties were drafted, including five LSU Tigers.

The Saints selected Sheldon Rankins with their first round selection on Thursday. The defensive tackle from Louisville was the 12th overall pick in the draft.

The team came back on Friday to draft two Buckeye players in the second round. Wide receiver Michael Thomas from Ohio State was drafted by New Orleans with 16th pick (47th overall) in the second round. 

The Saints traded their third round pick (78th overall) and fourth round pick (112th overall) to move back up in the 2nd round. With the 61st overall pick, New Orleans drafted another Buckeye player. S Vonn Bell was selected with the 30th pick in the 2nd round.

On Saturday, New Orleans traded its fifth round selection (152nd overall) and its fifth-round pick from next year's draft to the Washington Redskins in order to move up and draft defensive tackle David Onyemata from the University of Manitoba with the 22nd pick (120th overall) in the fourth round.

The Saints' final pick of the 2016 draft was running back Daniel Lasco from California with the 16th (237th overall) selection in the seventh and final round of the draft. 

In the 2015 NFL Draft, the Saints traded their 11th pick (187th overall) in the sixth round and their sixth-round pick in 2016 to the Washington Redskins to be able to move up and select cornerback Damian Swann. They will not have a pick in the sixth round because of that trade and they also did not receive any compensatory picks this year.

Five Tigers were drafted starting with former LSU linebacker Deion Jones, who was taken by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round with the 47th overall pick.

In the fourth round, former LSU offensive lineman Jerald Hawkins was taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 25th (123rd overall) selection, while former Tiger cornerback Rashard Robinson was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers with the 35th (133rd overall) pick. 

Two more Tigers were drafted back-to-back in the seventh and final round as safety Jalen Mills was picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 12th (233rd overall) pick and offensive tackle Vadal Alexander was taken by the Oakland Raiders with the 13th (234rd overall) selection. 

One player from Southeastern Louisiana, cornerback Harlan Miller, was drafted with the 30rd (205 overall) pick in the with round by the Arizona Cardinals. Three players from Louisiana Tech were also drafted: defensive tackle Vernon Butler (Panthers: 30th overall pick, 1st round), running back Kenneth Dixon (Ravens: 134th overall, 4th round), and quarterback Jeff Driskel (49ers: 207th overall, 6th round). 

Dak Prescott, the former Haughton alum, also got drafted in the fourth round by the Dallas Cowboys with the 135th overall pick. 

Ohio State (12) and Clemson (9) led the draft with the most selections. 

On Friday, several notable players were in Chicago to announce draft selections, including New Orleans native Marshall Faulk (Indianapolis Colts, 2nd round),  former LSU running back Kevin Faulk (New England Patriots, 3rd round),  former LSU defensive tackle Bennie Logan (Philadelphia Eagles, 3rd round) and former LSU center Kevin Mawae (New York Jets, 3rd round). For the New Orleans Saints, former players Deuce McAllister and Scott Fujita introduced the second and third draft picks, respectively.
