HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) -

Investigators with the Louisiana State Police arrested a suspect in connection with a deadly hit and run crash that happened Tuesday morning.

Troopers took 32 year-old Brandon Fowler, of Amite, in custody around 3 p.m. Tuesday for his involvement in the deadly crash that happened before 6 a.m. on LA 443 (Morris Road) near Vineyard Road in Hammond. LSP said the crash killed a bicyclist, 30-year-old Anand Singh Asi, of Hammond.

Investigators determined that Asi was riding his bike southbound on the side of LA 443 when he was struck from behind by a white Chevrolet Silverado 2500 pick-up. The truck was allegedly driven by Fowler.

According to LSP, witnesses told Troopers that the truck fled the scene, heading south on LA 443 toward US 190.

Troopers were able to find the truck and identify Fowler as the driver when the crash happened thanks to help from witnesses and media coverage, along with assistance from the Hammond Police Department, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the LSP Bureau of Investigation.

Fowler was arrested and charged with felony hit and run and illegal passing of a bicycle. The Tangipahoa Parish District Attorney’s Office will be consulted on any additional charges that could Fowler could face.

Troopers said Asi had taken safety precautions during his ride, by wearing an approved helmet and using both front and rear lamps on his bicycle. However, he was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office after being severely injured in the crash.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing and blood samples were obtained by Troopers for analysis at the LSP crime lab.

Anyone with information about the truck is urged to contact Louisiana State Police Troop L at 985-893-6250.
