BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Police announced the death of one of their K-9 officers Friday afternoon.

Niko, a K-9 unit for the Louisiana State Police, died after a bout with terminal cancer. Niko was born in 2005 and became a staple for LSP when she joined the force in 2007.

State Police says Niko earned several gold medals in K-9 competitions across the state and was recognized as part of the Criminal Patrols Team of the year.

"Niko was a very special and valuable part of our LSP family and we will be forever grateful for her contributions to our agency and to the safety of our state," said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. "Niko was a Trooper and wore her badge with pride as she served the citizens of Louisiana. My thoughts and prayers are with S/T St. Romain, his family, and the men and women that had the pleasure to serve with Niko."

Niko was involved with numerous arrests involving the seizure of millions of dollars in illegal narcotics.
