Slain SU students will receive posthumous degrees

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Southern University System voted at a board meeting Friday to award Annette January and Lashuntae Benton posthumous degrees.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said the two 19-year-olds were innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire of a shootout at the Cottages Apartments on Ben Hur Avenue on April 10.

January was a freshman from Gary, Indiana. Benton was a sophomore from Lake Charles.

University officials added January was a track and field athlete, while Benton was a student athletic trainer.
