BAKER, LA (WAFB) - A Baker family is looking for a place to live after fire destroyed their home early Wednesday morning.
The Baker Fire Department reported it responded to a fire on Hovey Avenue, which is off Groom Road, around 5:30 a.m. Officials said it took about 30 minutes to get it under control.
Fire investigators said the house is a total loss.
Assistant Fire Chief Howard Bonaventure said the house was about 75 percent involved when crews arrived on the scene.
Investigators have determined electrical problems caused the fire. While the family of nine was able to make it out safely, the mother said this is something that could have been prevented.
"It wasn't nothing but the Lord woke me up because I normally don't get up around that time," Antionette Jarrell said. "I smelled smoke and I just grabbed my kids and grabbed everything I could that's important to us. I'm just glad that the Lord woke me up to get us out the house."
The Red Cross is assisting the family.
