John Pope went 3-for-3 with three RBI and hit the game-winning two-run homer to highlight a five-run eighth, giving Southern an exciting 13-9 win over Prairie View Sunday and a sweep of its weekend SWAC series.
Southern (11-21, 6-11) entered the weekend on a nine-game losing streak, but Saturday's 16-5 run-rule victory over the Panthers clinched the series and gave the Jags a chance at the sweep.
The Jaguars broke on top with a five-run first inning, sparked by a Dondrayas Harris two-run single. Harris was 4-for-4 in the game with three RBI. But unlike Saturday when the Panthers (9-22, 4-13) fell behind 10-0 after Southern enjoyed a nine-run second inning, this time Prairie View rallied to tie the game 5-5 in the fourth.
And even when they trailed 8-5 in the seventh, the Panthers rallied again scoring four runs, including two on bases-loaded walks, to take a 9-8 lead.
However, Southern scored the tying run on a double steal in the bottom of the eighth when catcher Jaron Hicks dropped the ball trying to make the tag at home plate, and Pope broke the tie one out later with his homer to make it 11-9 Jaguars.
