BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Southern rode the right arm of East St. John sophomore Daniel Franklin Friday night, snapping its nine-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over Prairie View.
Franklin pitched eight innings of two-hit shutout baseball, striking out nine Panthers to give his Jags a 4-0 lead going to the ninth.
Prairie View scored a single run off reliever Troy Lewis in the ninth to avoid being blanked. Franklin (3-3) only walked two Panthers on the night.
Catcher Jose DeLa Torre was two for four and scored two runs in the victory, while Dondrayas Harris was also two for four with a run and an RBI.
The Jaguars go for the series win on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Game 2 of the three-game series.
