BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Officials confirm that a man accused of a shooting that resulted in the death of two Southern University students has been re-arrested after bonding out of jail.
According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, Ernest Felton was re-booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for a violation of his bail. They say he traveled to Dallas after his release from jail. A warrant was then issued for his arrest for the alleged bond violation. When Felton returned to Baton Rouge, police say he learned of the warrant and turned himself in to authorities.
Felton was released Wednesday after posting a $90,000 bond, which was set by Judge Higginbotham.
Two 19-year-old Southern University students, identified as freshman Annette January from Gary, Indiana and sophomore Lashuntae Benton from Lake Charles died, while a third victim, only identified as a 24-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
Investigators said Felton allegedly exchanged gunfire with the man who was injured and that's when detectives say both January and Benton were caught in the crossfire and killed.
Felton faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.
