PRIDE, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities said a man died after his vehicle went off the highway and slammed into a tree Tuesday afternoon.

Louisiana State Police identified the victim as Aramis Pepper, 33, of Zachary.

Troopers said the crash happened on LA 37 south of LA 63 near Pride in East Baton Rouge Parish around 4 p.m.

Tpr. Bryan Lee said the preliminary investigation shows Pepper was headed north on LA 37 in a 2012 Nissan Juke when the SUV crossed the center line and went off the road.

He added the vehicle continued until hitting a tree. Lee said investigators have not yet figured out what caused the SUV to cross the center line.

Troopers reported Pepper was not wearing a seatbelt and succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office.

Lee said it has not yet been determined if impairment was a factor in the crash, but per protocol for deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, a sample of his blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The investigation is ongoing.
