BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Devon Gales left Tuesday morning to return to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta to resume treatment for an injury that nearly paralyzed him last September.

"Staying at home, working out and mainly going to school and get a workout in," Gales said before boarding his flight. "Thank you to everybody that's been supporting me and it's been helpful to me and my family."

Family members said Gales will spend the next three months continuing his rehabilitation. He returned home to Baton Rouge to a city-wide celebration in early March.

The Southern University wide receiver spent five months at the Shepherd Center after his injury, regaining strength in his muscles and relearning many basic functions.

Gales' has become a nationwide story of faith and steadfast determination.

The former Central High standout sustained a spinal injury during Southern's game against the University of Georgia on September 26.

A fund was set up by the Southern University System is assisting the family financially with travel and other expenses accrued while Devon was being treated in Georgia.
