BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development kicked off Work Zone Awareness Week.
The purpose of Work Zone Awareness Week is promote safe driving through construction zones.
Thirteen cones were placed at the state capitol to represent the 13 people killed in work zone in Louisiana in 2014.
"One cone, as we know, it's too many," says Lt. J.B. Slaton with the Louisiana State Police. "Even if there's one cone too many. And every one of those cones does represent someone's family, someone's in-laws, someone's children."
The theme of this year's awareness week is "Don't be that driver."
DOTD is trying to focus on distracted driving. They are urging Baton Rouge drivers to not use their phone while driving and also not to drink and drive.
