SU interim athletic director speaks about the deaths of 2 athletes

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Southern University Student Government Association is set to hold a candlelight vigil for two students killed in a shooting at an apartment complex near LSU Sunday morning.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. at the Cottages Apartments in the 700 block of Den Hur Drive.

Sophomore Lashuntae Benton of Lake Charles and freshman Annette January of Gary, Indiana, both 19, were killed when gunshots erupted during a social gathering in one of the parking lots at the complex.

The vigil will be held Tuesday, April 12 at 6 p.m. in the courtyard of the Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union.

Southern University says the on-campus counseling center will allow walk-in appointments for students coping with the loss and will also extend its hours until 6:30 p.m.

A private counseling session will be held for the university's student-athletes in the A.W. Mumford Field House at 3 p.m. Monday.

The Southern University System Foundation has established a memorial fund to support the families of Benton and January. Donations to the Benton-January fund can be made here.
