WHISKEY BAY, LA (WAFB) -

Louisiana State Police said one person is dead after a single-vehicle crash on I-10 on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge early Monday morning.

The victim was identified as Kenith Simpson, 47, of Jackson, Mississippi.

Troopers said the wreck happened on the I-10 West off-ramp at LA 975, which is near Whiskey Bay in Iberville Parish, just after midnight.

Tpr. Bryan Lee with LSP said the investigation showed Daryann Villareal, 19, also of Jackson, was driving a 2011 Toyota Camry on I-10 West when she fell asleep at the wheel and hit the guardrail, causing the car to spin.

Lee added Simpson was not properly buckled and was thrown out of the car while it was spinning. Troopers reported Simpson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberville Parish Coroner's Office. They said Villareal was wearing a seatbelt, but still suffered moderate injuries in the crash.

Investigators said they don't suspect impairment in the crash, but per protocol for deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, a sample of blood was taken from Villareal and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Charges are pending.

The investigation is ongoing.
