2 SU students killed in shooting at apartment complex near LSU

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating an overnight shooting that left two women dead and a man injured. 

Police were called to the scene of a shooting at the Cottages Apartments in the 700 block of Ben Hur Drive around 2 a.m. Sunday. 

According to a BRPD spokesperson, the shooting happened during a social gathering in a parking lot of the apartment complex. 

When officers arrived at the scene, they found three people, 2 females and a male, suffering from gunshot wounds. 

One woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The second woman was taken to a local hospital where she later died. 

The male, who is 24-years-old, was also taken to a local hospital. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

According to police, both women were 19-years-old and students at Southern University. 

While police did not release any names, the Southern University System identifies the two victims as Lashuntae Benton of Lake Charles and Annette January of Gary, Indiana. 

Ray L. Belton, president of the Southern University System released a statement about the death of two of its students.

"It is with deep sadness that the University confirms that two Southern University Baton Rouge female student-athletes were killed early Sunday, April 10, 2016. According to law enforcement, freshman track and field athlete Annette January of Gary, Indiana, and sophomore student athletic trainer Lashuntae Benton of Lake Charles, were killed by gunfire outside of an apartment complex in Baton Rouge near LSU, early this morning. An investigation is ongoing. The University asks for prayers and support for the families at this difficult time."

Police say they currently have no suspects or motive at this time.
