GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - A brand new dog park opened Friday in Ascension Parish.
Dozens of residents showed up at the dog park is located next to Jambalaya Park in Gonzales. Dogs inside the park will not have to be on a leash.
The park sits on an acre. Within the dog park is a smaller enclosure for small dogs.
"You don't have to worry about your small dog being intimidated by the larger dogs," said Charlotte Guidry, a spokesperson for the city of Gonzales.
Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux said he has been wanting this park for about three years.
"Everyone is incredibly excited. This has been a long time coming. Today to see so many members of the public show up for the grand opening was very rewarding for the city," Guidry said. "The people of Ascension Parish adore their animals and this is something that's very necessary.
Guidry said the park has been in the works for many years.
"Jackie Baumann, Chief Engineer for the city, worked tirelessly on this project. She spearheaded this and was phenomenal," Guidry said.
Arceneaux added that the park is just a quality of life plus for Gonzales residents.
"It's a place where you can take a book and relax," Guidry said. "Jambalaya Park is being used so much more. The swimming pool is now open. Groups are using the park. It's very user friendly and family friendly."
The park will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day of the week.
