BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - While the Baton Rouge Zoo celebrated a milestone today, visitors are still left wondering if the animal kingdom will re-locate.
Located off of Thomas Road in North Baton Rouge, the zoo celebrated its 46th birthday.
Officials with BREC say there's still more research to be done before a decision is made.
"Internally, we still need some time, quite a bit of time probably, to digest all of that information and determine what we're going to do with it," said
Kaki Heiligenthal, the Director of Marketing and Development for the zoo. "Make sure we really explore all the options and do our due diligence in making sure we've done our research."
While the zoo does have its history, families that spoke to WAFB News said they would be in favor of a move.
Kejohn Smith said, "It actually, I feel it would be better moving because it would give, it would be closer to a lot more people. It won't…because out here it's kind of far for some people, so it'd actually be a good thing."
"We'd like it to move closer to where we live. So we could go out more often. I mean, it's OK if it's here," said Bianca Cameron.
One potential spot for relocation is land south of LSU. It would cost an estimated one hundred and ten million dollars to rebuild.
The BREC Commission is still looking over research for a possible move.
It is unknown when a final decision will be made.
