BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said IRS scams are once again becoming a big problem in the state.

He is warning residents and businesses about telephone scammers claiming money is owed to the IRS and must be paid right away using a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer.

The callers threaten victims with arrest or suspension of licenses if they refuse to cooperate.

"These scammers are shameless criminals who will stop at nothing to get your cash or personal information," Landry said in a written release. "If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a representative from the IRS who is threatening to take legal action against you, remember that the IRS does not initiate contact requesting information by electronic means. Also, they do not call asking for credit cards numbers or demanding payment without first sending a notification by mail."
