BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - In just a few days, almost everyone across the state of Louisiana will start paying an extra penny on nearly every dollar they spend.
A one-cent sales tax increase will go into effect Friday.
It will raise Louisiana's local and state sales tax to the highest in the US.
This is a result of a bill passed by lawmakers during the special legislative session to try to close the state's massive budget deficit.
Consumers will see additional tax hikes on cigarettes and alcohol on April 1.
