Disaster Recovery Center set to open in Gonzales

GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Federal, state and local agencies are preparing to open doors at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center to offer disaster assistance to people recovering following recent storms.

The recent heavy rains and subsequent flooding did not impact everyone in Ascension Parish.  Some experienced bad damage, and some residents like Henry Bourgere, said it was too close for comfort.

"We made it through. I mean, the water didn't come into the house, but it got pretty doggone close to the door step," Bourgere said.

Bougere's house didn't take in water. But he lost power for two days and had to clean out his refrigerator. He is hoping to get some of that money back with government assistance. He and others looking for help with that or anything else, for that matter, can find it at Lamar Dixon.

FEMA, GOHSEP, U.S. Small Business Administration, and volunteers who are still helping with recovery efforts will be there to help residents get the help they qualify for.

GOHSEP Communications Director, Mike Steele, urged that residents continue cleaning up their properties and document any expenses they may have.

"They need to have identification, any insurance document that may be important to their property or damage they received, any documents they may have along those lines could help with the process," Steele said.

Ascension Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness Director, Rick Webre, said recent rains combined with tornadoes in February forced many residents on the path to recovery.

"It's difficult to track. So we are doing the best we can to see where the damage is and how to inform the public to get here and get the assistance they need," Webre said.

The doors open to the public at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning. Officials encourage you to pre-register online at www.emergency.la.gov.

The Disaster Recovery Center will be open to Ascension Parish residents for the next 30 days.

Those looking for food assistance, however, will need to go on the day that corresponds with their last name. The schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, March 30 - A-F

Thursday, March 31 - G-N

Friday, April 1 - O-Z

Saturday, April 2 - A-K (applicants unable to make prior scheduled day)

Sunday, April 3 - L-Z (applicants unable to make prior scheduled day)
