TICKFAW, LA (WAFB) - One man died and another was seriously injured in a crash involving a garbage truck in Tickfaw on Tuesday morning.
Just before 7:30 a.m., 64-year-old Edward Stewart, of Independence, was driving down LA 442. Ahead of Stewart in the same lane was a Mack Garbage Truck, driven by 40-year-old Christi Davis. The garbage truck was stopped as it collected trash. For reasons under investigation, Stewart did not recognize the stopped truck, and ran into the back of it.
Stewart was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Joel Figueroa, 33, of Hammond, was collecting garbage behind the truck at the time of the crash. Figueroa was seriously injured in the crash and was airlifted to a local hospital.
Troopers do not expect impairment to be a factor in this crash, but a blood sample was obtained from both drivers and will be tested as part of the investigation.
