BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Many homeowners in southeast Louisiana were caught off guard by historic flooding and were unfortunately without flood insurance.
According to federal data, around 20 percent of flood insurance claims are filed in areas not considered at high risk for flooding.
Insurance agents recommended flooding insurance for all customers as homeowners insurance alone will not cover flood damage.
Agents say that it takes 30 days for a policy to kick in, meaning any insurance purchase now can only help for future flooding.
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was created in 1968 to help the public with flood insurance.
