Man arrested, hit with shovel after allegedly attacking victim with machete

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Two attempted second degree murder suspects were arrested by Baton Rouge Police after one suspect was admitted to the hospital for injuries he sustained during a fight.

Police officers were dispatched to the 3700 block of Victoria Drive on March 8 in reference to three men fighting. Upon arrival, they found a man, later found to be 30-year-old Juan Vasquez, with a large gash on his forehead. He was transported to OLOL Hospital.

Investigators interviewed the victim who said he was confronted by Vasquez and another suspect, named Juan Delgado, outside of a store. The victim told police Vasquez was going to kill him as payback for a fight they had months prior.

The victim said Vasquez and Delgado each pulled out machetes and chased him to a nearby residence. Police say the victim was able to grab a nearby shovel, threw it while on the ground, striking Vasquez in the head.

The statements were corroborated by Delgado and by surveillance video outside the store where the altercation began.

Vasquez was arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder. His bond was set at $50,000. Delgado was also arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder. His bond was set at $150,000.
