BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Livingston and Tangipahoa parishes were approved to receive federal disaster assistance due to recent flooding as Gov. John Bel Edwards' request was granted Tuesday to expand the existing federal declaration for the state to include those and several other parishes.
"This expanded declaration will provide much needed resources for Louisiana families in serious need of assistance during such a challenging time," Edwards said in a written release. "My administration and officials across the state will continue to work together to help every citizen in need."
The other 16 additional parishes that were approved are Beauregard, Bienville, Caddo, Caldwell, DeSoto, LaSalle, Livingston, Madison, Natchitoches, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Union, Vernon, Washington, West Carroll and Winn.
Bossier, Claiborne, Grant, Morehouse, Ouachita, Richland, and Webster parishes were previously approved by the federal government.
"After days of visiting disaster areas and meeting with the families experiencing devastating loss because of flood waters across Louisiana, I have amended my request to include additional parishes in the Major Presidential Declaration for the State of Louisiana," Edwards said early Tuesday in a written release. "State and local officials have given timely support to every parish in need, and we will continue to work around the clock to be sure that every citizen who is impacted by the flooding receives the disaster assistance he or she needs."
Edwards said more parishes have assessed the number of affected households, resulting in the request for federal aid for additional areas.
Officials say the emergency declaration can be amended again to include more parishes later on, but that it was critical those parishes report damages to local government so officials can complete damage assessments, which would be forwarded to the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP).
