BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - It is a tale of two tournaments between Baton Rouge's LSU and Southern University.
LSU Basketball Head Coach Johnny Jones announced Sunday afternoon that the Tigers will not participate in any post-season tournament. After a disappointing 19-14 season, Coach Jones said that they will use the extended off-season to "get better and start preparations for next season."
Jones consulted with his staff and met with the team earlier on Sunday before announcing the decision. The Tigers would have been down one of their leaders in Keith Hornsby, who was sidelined after re-aggravating an injury he suffered in November.
Also questionable would have been Antonio Blakeney, who LSU says was playing while feeling ill in the team's two SEC tournament games.
Meanwhile, the Southern University Jaguars (22-12) are making their 9th trip back to the dance after winning the SWAC Championship against Jackson State. This marks their first appearance after losing a competitive game in the first round to Gonzaga in 2013 tournament.
The 16th seed Jags are looking to pick up their first win at the NCAA Tournament in 23 years as they face Holy Cross (14-19) in the "First Four" tournament preliminaries.
The winner of that game goes on to face the tall order of knocking off the No. 1 seed in the West, Oregon.
