Unrestrained 9-year-old dies after 2-vehicle crash in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - An unrestrained 9-year-old died after a two-vehicle crash in Baton Rouge.

Louisiana State Police says 9-year-old Baton Rouge resident Fernando Menendez died after a pickup truck, driven by 32-year-old Elmer Menendez, was traveling eastbound on LA 42 on Highland Road east of LA 3246 at Siegen Lane. At the same time, 46-year-old Ron Adams was traveling westbound on the same road.

For unknown reasons to state police, Menendez lost control of his vehicle, which began to rotate and spin. His vehicle eventually crossed the center line of LA 42 and into the path of Adams' vehicle. Adams' vehicle struck Menendez's car on the right side.

9-year-old Fernando Menendez was unrestrained and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Elmer Menendez sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported to an area hospital. Adams was properly restrained and received moderate injuries.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from both drivers for analysis.  Upon his release from the hospital, Menendez will be booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail for Negligent Injuring, Careless Operation, No Seat Belt, and No Child Restraint.
