HOUSTON, TX (WAFB) - Trelun Banks led five Southern players in double figures with 19 points, and the Jaguars stormed past SWAC regular season champion Texas Southern 81-73 Friday night to earn a spot in the men's tournament championship game.
No. 4 seed Southern meets No. 3 Jackson State Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in Houston on ESPNU.
Banks grabbed a rebound for a layup and drilled a three-pointer to fuel an 18-0 Jaguars run for a 20-2 lead over the stunned Tigers. Adrian Rodgers, who chipped in 16 points, added a slam dunk three point play off an assist from Christopher Hyder, who scored 14 points to go with a game-high five assists.
Jared Sam and Shawn Prudhomme also added 13 points apiece for Southern (21-12), which had split two regular season games with TSU (18-14). A win Saturday over JSU, another Tigers team Southern split games with during the regular season, would earn Roman Banks and his team an automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
Sandy Pugh's Lady Jags also beat Texas Southern 62-54 earlier on Friday afternoon, behind 19 points from Briana Green. Southern only led by one point entering the fourth quarter, but pulled away. Alabama State will be the Lady Jag's opponent in the SWAC Championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
