The LSU Tigers lived to fight another day at the SEC Tournament, pulling away late to defeat the Tennessee Volunteers 84-75 in Nashville.
The Tigers got great offensive contributions from their trio of guards as Antonio Blakeney, Tim Quarterman and Josh Gray, who started, combined for 51 points in the victory. Blakeney had a game-high 22 points and was a perfect 9 for 9 from the free-throw line.
LSU improves to 19-13 overall and advances to the SEC Tournament semifinals against Texas A&M at noon Saturday. The Aggies defeated the Florida Gators 72-66 Friday to improve to an impressive 25-7 overall.
LSU star freshman Ben Simmons played only five minutes or so in the first half after picking up a pair of quick fouls. However, Simmons avoided such difficulties in the second stanza and finished with 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting, while also grabbing 8 rebounds.
The Tigers shot a stellar 57 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes, while also hitting 76.2 percent of their free throws (16-21) during that stretch.
