HOUSTON, TX (WAFB) - Adrian Rodgers scored 22 points and Southern used an early 13-0 run to spark a SWAC Tournament blowout of Alabama State 83-63 Thursday night in Houston. The No. 4 seed Jaguars advanced to Friday night's semifinal against No.1 seed Texas Southern.
Trelun Banks and Jared Sam added 13 points each as Southern used stifling defense to grab a 21-6 lead in the first half, holding the Hornets to 12.5 percent shooting, while making 66.7 percent of its field goals. Another 7-0 run increased the lead to 30-11 before Alabama State trimmed the lead to 40-26 at halftime.
For the game, the Jaguars shot 49 percent compared to just 33 percent for the Hornets. Southern also outrebounded ASU 45-33, with Rodgers grabbing a team-best eight to go with three assists. Alabama State was the tournament's No. 5 seed.
Southern (20-12) split its regular season meetings with Texas Southern, which had a 16-2 mark to win the SWAC regular season title. The Tigers defeated No. 8 Alabama A&M 77-69 in their first round game Wednesday night.
