La. House passes bill to remove exemptions from sales tax

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The bill that would remove exemptions from 1 penny of the sales tax passed the House Monday night. 

HB 61, which was authored by Rep. Jay Morris, R-Monroe, passed the Louisiana House of Representatives with 87 yeas and 15 nays.

By removing the exemptions, business utilities and the purchase of machinery would be taxed. 

The bill would bring in an estimated $20 million this year. An amendment, which was passed, has the tax expiring after 3 years

The bill now goes to the Senate.
