BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The city of Baton Rouge welcomed home Southern University football player, Devon Gales Saturday.
Devon Gales suffered a severe spinal cord injury on the football field during a game in October against the Georgia Bulldogs.
Gales spent the last five months in Georgia after undergoing surgery and going through rehab for the injury.
In honor of his return, Mayor Kip Holden declared Saturday "Devon Gales Day".
"It's still going through my mind. I have a day after me now. I never imagined me having a day," says Gales. "I'm home. It was a lot of excitement because I haven't been home in five months and it's been a road that I've been able to get to."
Southern University also presented Gales with a check for $400,000 from funds raised for the "Devon Gales Fund".
