BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Louisiana smokers should expect to spend more after the state Senate passed a bill to increase the tax on a pack of cigarettes by 22 cents.

HB 14, which was authored by Rep. Walt Leger, D-New Orleans, will increase the tax on cigarettes to a total of $1.08. It passed by a vote of 33 yays to 2 nays.

Lawmakers said raising the cigarette tax would bring in an immediate $11 million if the tax goes into effect on April 1.

The bill now heads to Governor Edwards, who will likely sign the measure.
