BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The governor has signed an executive order to fly flags at half-staff in honor of State Representative Ronnie Edwards' passing.
The executive order by Governor John Bel Edwards states that flags will to be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol and all public and state buildings on Friday, March 4 until sunset.
Rep. Edwards passed away on Wednesday, February 24 at the age of 63 after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
"Ronnie Edwards was a dedicated public servant who devoted herself to fighting for others," said Gov. Edwards. "Her warm demeanor and steadfast spirit left an impression on the many lives she touched. Louisiana has lost a powerful voice of compassion and activism. Donna and I continue to keep her family and friends in our thoughts and prayers, and I take comfort in the knowledge that her tireless efforts will inspire good works for generations to come."
Services for Edwards will also be held Friday in Baton Rouge at the Living Faith Christian Center, starting with a viewing from 8 a.m. until the funeral service at 10 a.m. Edwards' burial will immediately follow the service at the Heavenly Gates Mausoleum. After her burial, a repast will be held at the Charles R. Kelly Community Center.
She previously served two terms on the East Baton Rouge Metro Council before being elected to the State House of Representatives in October. A special election will be held on Saturday, April 9 to fill her now vacant seat.
