BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

After an anonymous tip to the Scotlandville High School administration Monday morning about a gun on campus, a 12th grade student was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Around 11:20 a.m., the School Drug Task Force responded to Scotlandville High School in reference to a gun found in the book sack of an 12th grade student.

An anonymous person said 17-year-old Major Payton was in possession of a pistol on school property. Officials found an unloaded .22 caliber revolver in his book sack, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office.

According to deputies, Payton said he moved over the weekend and put the gun into the book sack. Payton said he forgot the weapon was in the book sack until he opened it at school and the gun fell onto the desk.

Payton booked into the Parish Prison for illegal carrying of a weapon on school property and  violation of a weapon free zone.
