BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office released the names of the six deputies who were involved in a deadly shooting Tuesday night.
General detectives Sgt. Charles Montgomery and Det. Shannon Broussard, Homicide detectives Sgt. Scott Henning and Cpl. Chris Masters and uniform patrol deputies Lt. Michael Birdwell and Sgt. Verner Budd from the Gardere substation were on the scene when the shooting happened.
The detectives involved were placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure, following the incident.
Louisiana State Police is still investigating who exactly fired in the shooting that happened in the 1300 block of Terrace Avenue near Eddie Robinson Drive late Tuesday evening.
According to officials, EBRSO detectives shot and killed 48-year-old Travis Stevenson after responding to a disturbance earlier Tuesday evening. Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said the man was suicidal, possibly trying to commit suicide by cop.
Around 10 p.m., Two EBRSO homicide detectives found Stevenson in the area of Eddie Robinson and Terrace Avenue and tried to get Stevenson out of his vehicle. Officials said the detectives fired at Stevenson's vehicle after he tried to ram into them with it. Stevenson was shot and pronounced dead on the scene.
The sheriff said early Wednesday morning that LSP investigators from Hammond were called in to handle the investigation, which is ongoing. He added that the Baton Rouge Police Department is handling the crime scene.
The district attorney's office will also be investigating the incident.
