BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Week two of the Special Legislative Session is under way, meaning that the House Ways and Means Committee has a long evening in front of them.
They are currently hearing testimony about various tax bills and propositions. Some of the discussion focuses on taxes on hotel room dealers like Expedia.com or AirBnB along with many other bills and money-raising possibilities.
No votes are expected today, but as the Special Session progresses, the state is getting a better look at how proposed cuts to higher education would impact the LSU Ag Center.
Officials with the Ag Center say they have lost $23 million over the past five years from the budget, and new looming cuts have leaders worried about rice farmers.
"Rice farming is one of the biggest things people do in this area, and a lot of those farmers use the Ag Center for our research," says James Meaux with the LSU Ag Center. He says a lot of the research into new types of rice that are resistant to insects and diseases would not get done.
The Special Legislative Session discussing the budget ends March 9. Live streaming video of the session can be found HERE.
