BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - An East Baton Rouge grand jury indicted a man in connection to a shooting that killed a man last year.

Cedrick Smith, 19, was indicted for second-degree murder Thursday.

Smith is accused in the death of 20-year-old Artez Hamilton during a shooting in the 4300 block of Southpark Drive before 9:30 p.m. on August 19. Artez was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died while in surgery.

Deputies say they received information that Hamilton arranged a meeting with an unknown man or men to trade two assault-style rifles for two handguns. Witnesses later identified Smith as a man seen running away from the scene.

Smith was on the run for more than a month before turning himself into police on October 23. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison where he has been charged with illegal use of a weapon and second-degree murder. Smith was held on a $175,000 bond.
