ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) - The Ascension Parish School Board has named an interim superintendent at Tuesday night's board meeting.
A. Denise Graves has been selected as the new Interim Superintendent of Ascension Public Schools.
Graves will replace Dr. Patrice Pujol and will start effectively when Pujol retires March 1,
Graves has worked for the school system for 35 years and currently is one of the district's two assistant superintendents,
"What I need you all to understand is that as of March 1st, nothing changes in this school district; the vision and the goals remain the same. I have an outstanding leadership team behind me, and this is why we are successful. We have always put students first, and that will not change," said Graves.
Graves has started as a physical education teacher and basketball coach at St. Amant High School in 1982.
She became assistant principal of St. Amant High in 1994 before becoming principal at Gonzales Middle School in 1998.
Graves was promoted to director of middle schools in 1999 and then director of human resources in 2003.
In 2009, Graves stepped into her current job as assistant superintendent. She oversees the business operations of the school district.
Graves has a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from the University of Texas El Paso, a master's degree in kinesiology from LSU, and more than 30 graduate hours in educational administration from LSU.
The school board will have an open search for the permanent superintendent. The details of the search process will be brought up at the next Executive Committee meeting on February 23 at 5:30 p.m.
