Shell Chemical breaks ground on major plant expansion in Ascension Parish

GEISMAR, LA (WAFB)

Shell Chemical looks to make a major expansion at its plant in Geismar.

Leaders in Ascension Parish helped break ground Tuesday on a $717 million project to create the world's largest single-site production of alpha olefins.

The impact from the plant's expansion will reach well beyond the borders of the community.

"The products we make there are the building blocks for a lot of consumer products like detergent, solvents, said Rhoman Hardy, site manager at Shell Chemical in Geismar. "We sell that to customers all around the world and they turn it into the final products that people buy."

Shell said the project will create about 1,500 construction jobs and an additional 20 full-time jobs.

It should be complete by early 2018.
