BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Church elders at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church said they have had to cancel service twice in the last month after issues with Entergy.

Church member Sandra Ike said the problems appeared when Entergy started working on the old gas lines in the area.

"We've had to cancel church twice, our rehearsals, our Bible studies because we don't want our members sitting in the cold church with coats on breathing in that cold air," she said. "So it's very frustrating."

Ike said at first Entergy officials were working with the church to see if their work had damaged the church's gas lines. She said the worker eventually took the church's gas meter.

"We're at a standstill right now," Ike said. "And you know with it being a winter month, it's really a huge inconvenience."

Sidney Henry Junior lives near the church and has had problems at his home too.

"It's been very difficult because everyone's having problems," he said. "The work is necessary it needs to be done and like I say, if they mess up something you want them to straighten it out before they leave."

9News contacted Entergy about the issues at the church. An Entergy spokeswoman said they will have an investigator check out the situation immediately.

"You know I realize the changing out the gas lines because they're old," Ike said. "I just feel like they need to be fair about it. If you cause a problem, go ahead and fix it but don't inconvenience the neighborhood."
