LAFOURCHE PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A Thibodaux man died after his vehicle crashed into a canal Monday around 11:15 p.m., according to officials with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office.
Deputies say 41-year-old Eric Laughlin of Thibodaux crashed in Choctaw, LA late Monday night.
A fireman from the Choctaw Volunteer Fire Department noticed an overturned vehicle in the canal that runs along Sanchez Road. Deputies responded and found Laughlin was still in the vehicle as it was submerged in the canal about 50 feet from the bank.
An investigation revealed Laughlin, who was not wearing a seat belt, failed to negotiate a turn, sending the vehicle crashing into the canal, according to the sheriff's office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies say alcohol use is suspected to be a factor in the crash, and routine toxicology tests are pending as this crash remains under investigation.
