Police said a traffic stop ended in gunfire after a passenger in the vehicle led them on a chase late Thursday night.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reported it started on North Acadian Thruway near North Street shortly before 11 p.m. and ended on Lynn Drive.

Officers said the female driver was pulled over for suspected drunk driving and asked to take a field sobriety test. They added the passenger remained in the car.

According to investigators, while the officer was conducting the test on the driver, the passenger moved to the driver’s side of the vehicle and took off. They added the chase then ensued.

Police reportedly chased the vehicle to the 4000 block of Lynn Drive. Police said the driver then pulled the vehicle over and jumped out. They added an officer believed the man pointed a gun at him, so he fired his gun one time in the direction of the suspect.

During a later search of the vehicle, police reportedly found a gun.

Authorities said the suspect continued running. It is unknown whether he was hit by the bullet.

Police were unable to locate the suspect and are still trying to identity him.
