BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A 39-year-old man with a violent criminal history will stand trial for second-degree murder, a grand jury concluded.

Michael Collins was indicted Thursday for the shooting death of 28-year-old Levi Alexander. A grand jury indictment does not presume guilt, but rather allows the prosecution to move forward with the case.

The shooting happened on September 14, 2015 on North 23rd Street near I-110 and Plank Road. The Baton Rouge Police Department investigated the case.

Investigators say they located video from a nearby store that captured the entire shooting. They say there was audio as well.

If convicted, Collins could face life in prison without the possibility of parole or probation.
