Middle school teacher arrested, charged with inappropriate contact with a minor

CLINTON, LA (WAFB) - According to officials with the Clinton Police Department, 33-year-old Louis Neyland Smith Jr. was arrested Wednesday morning after being accused of inappropriate contact with a minor. Smith Jr. is an 8th grade ELA teacher at East Feliciana Middle School, according to the school's website.

Officials say the parent of a student came to the police station this morning to make a complaint.

"She was highly upset," said Chief Fred Dunn.  "She was concerned about her daughter and she just wanted something done about it."

The parent showed police evidence of inappropriate contact on the child's cell phone. Police reviewed the four pages of text messages and contacted the District Attorney.

Smith Jr. was arrested while he was on his way out of the school board office.

Chief Fred Dunn says it is possible there could be more charges added. At this time he is charged with indecent behavior with a juvenile, computer-aided solicitation of a minor and inappropriate contact between educator and student.

He is being booked into the East Feliciana Parish Prison.

The school board says he's now on administrative leave.
