BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Father Thomas Clark opened mass Sunday morning at the Immaculate Conception Church addressing a deadly shooting.

He asked the Catholic church to pray for the family of 23-year-old Ryan Armwood.

"The tragic killing of this young man affects us all," said Father Clark. "It's part of our neighborhood. It's part of our community. And as a praying community in this neighborhood, we want to pray for the needs of all people."

The church is just steps from where Baton Rouge Police say Armwood was shot and killed Saturday while he was standing in the middle of Fairchild Street.

Father Clark spoke privately Saturday with Armwood's mother.

"He was a neighbor. He was a son to a grieving mother. He was a friend," said Father Clark.

Investigators say they do not know who shot Armwood or why.

Father Clark hopes prayer will lead to peace for Armwood's family.

"Sometimes we get very numb to violence around us," said Father Clark. "It happens so frequently that we kind of want to distance ourselves from it. We want to not really think of the tragic impact of it."

If you have information regarding the shooting, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP.
