BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A corrections officer accused of raping an inmate at a Baton Rouge hospital was indicted on Thursday.
Michael Gaiter, 58, was indicted after allegedly raping an inmate at a hospital in September 2015.
The inmate was sent to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital after suffering a seizure. He was escorted to his hospital room by two guards. Reports from the Baton Rouge Police Department say that one of the guards left the room at 2 a.m., leaving only Gaiter in the room.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Gaiter let the inmate out of his handcuffs to use the restroom. Once the inmate came out, Gaiter was said to be sitting in a chair with his gun in his lap and reportedly said "I got you now," before allegedly raping the prisoner.
Gaiter was indicted on charges of aggravated rape, malfeasance in office – sexual conduct with a prisoner.
