Man accused of stealing more than $1,500 worth of cigarettes

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A man suspected of stealing nearly $2,000 worth of cigarettes from stores was arrested Wednesday.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office reported Charlie Johnson, 38, of Baton Rouge, is accused of stealing $1,000 worth of cigarettes from a Circle K on Jones Creek Road on January 17.

Deputies said he allegedly got away with about $700 worth of cigarettes from a Rite-Aid on Millerville Road on Monday.

According to the probable cause report, the man believed to have taken the cigarettes from the Rite-Aid went back there Wednesday afternoon. A manager followed him and called authorities.

Johnson was later arrested in a parking lot. Investigators said he denied stealing the cigarettes from the businesses, but the report states that during questioning, Johnson told deputies "he knew which business was currently burying cartons of stolen cigarettes."

Johnson was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a charge of theft. His bond was set at $11,000.
