BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - "Groovin' For Gales," a charity concert to benefit Southern Jaguar and former Central High School football player Devon Gales, will take place Friday night at The Varsity Theatre in Baton Rouge beginning at 7 p.m.
The musical lineup is packed with popular and talented R&B artists, featuring The Michael Foster Project, U4ria, The Neighborhood Stars and very special guest Kool DJ Supah Mike. Tickets are available now at varsitytheatre.com, The Chimes near LSU and the front door. All proceeds raised from the show will go to Gales, who was badly injured during Southern's game against Georgia earlier this season, but continues to make tremendous progress and display an amazing attitude.
"I'm excited for it," Southern head coach Dawson Odums said about the concert. "Any time you can bring people together and raise money for a great cause, I think that's always great. There's no greater cause. This young man has challenges now, but he's going to have challenges down the road from a financial standpoint. And, it's great that the community and the surrounding areas are coming together to promote such a great cause."
Gales told Coach Odums he experienced feeling in his knees this week for the first time since the accident and likewise believes that sensation will soon travel to his feet as well.
"That excitement and energy level he brings to the table is the reason why everyone is following the story. Because he hasn't had a bad day. Every day he comes to work and works hard to overcome his adversity. And when you talk to him, he's excited. If you didn't read the story or know the story, you would never know he's going through what he's going through," Odums added.
Odums and Southern University encourages everyone to attend and pack the house.
