Four quarterbacks who led their teams to state championships headline the list of finalists for WAFB’s Warrick Dunn Award for the Sportsline Player of the Year.
Shyheim Carter of Kentwood, Parkview Baptist’s Reginald Hayes, Zach Kelly of Silliman Institute and Zachary’s Lindsey Scott all won WAFB’s Sportsline Friday Nite Player of the Week awards during the 2015 season, which was capped by taking their teams to the state title.
Kelly led his Wildcats to an MAIS championship in November, followed by Hayes taking the Eagles to the LHSAA’s Division II title.
Carter and Scott celebrated championships at the Superdome on the final weekend of the season, with the Kangaroos claiming the Class 1A crown before Scott led the Broncos to their first state title in school history with a 5A Championship.
All four quarterbacks were named MVPs for their championship game performances.
This year’s winner will be announced January 27 at WAFB’s annual Warrick Dunn Awards banquet. Last year LSU running back Nick Brossette took Sportsline Player of the Year honors, and Tigers’ linebacker Kendell Beckwith won the award in 2012, following former LSU running back Terrence Magee in 2010. Other past winners include Blaine Gautier of Lutcher in 2007, Shane Andrus of Christian Life in 2008, Capitol’s Frankie Jackson in 2009, New York Giants safety Landon Collins from Dutchtown in 2011 and Louisiana Tech linebacker Russell Farris of Livonia in 2013.
In total, nine players will be named finalists. Click here to learn who are the remaining five finalists.
